Welcome to SiteDesignWorks! This Welcome Kit contains all the information you need to get started. We strongly recommend that you read these instructions to avoid delays or unexpected fees during your website production.

NOTE: Your artwork must be accompanied by an Artwork Submission Form. Read on for details.

PREPARING & SUBMITTING YOUR IMAGES

Image Submission
Your first step is to choose your artwork/images and submit them to SiteDesignWorks for production. Your website includes 17 free introductory images, provided they are in digital or 35mm slide format (digital preferred). Our Production Staff will size, optimize, and add these images to your website during website construction.

You may submit additional images for a discounted introductory rate of $6.50 each. After your site is constructed, image additions are billed at our normal fee schedule, so it may be beneficial to take advantage of the discounted rate now if you plan to add more than 17 images, and if you do not plan to sign up for Image Transfer.

Digital Images
Digital images are the preferred image format. They are easily replaced if lost, can be sent quickly over the Internet (saving you shipping fees), and give you the best final image quality on your website. Since scanning always requires sharpening, touch ups and color correction, sending digital files lets you correct your own images yourself before sending them to us. This will give you the most control over how your images look on your website.

Format: We accept digital images in JPEG, GIF, TIFF, PSD, and PDF format.

Dimension: Images should be no smaller than 800 pixels on the longest side.

File Size: Images should be no larger than 10MB in file size.

Delivery by Mail: You may send digital images on a ZIP disc, DVD or CD. Be sure to Print and fill out an Artwork Submission Form, and include it in your package.

If you want your ZIP or disc returned to you, be sure to let us know. We do not return digital material automatically. There will be a $7.50 shipping fee to return artwork, unless a SASE is provided with your submission.

Artwork Submission Form: Digital images submitted by mail must be accompanied by an Artwork Submission Form. Please use the link below to fill out and print your form.

Online Delivery (FTP): You may submit digital images online. The Artwork Submission Form for Online Delivery is located at the FTP site. Please read all directions and fill out the form located there before submitting.

Large images can take a considerable amount of time to upload to the server, which may cause your computer to “hang” or error. If your images are larger than 10MB each, you should resize them to smaller file sizes, or send them via regular mail (see above). You should not submit more than 100MB worth of files at one time.

Original Artwork
We recommend sending digital artwork, however we will accept 35mm slides for your 17 free starter images. Our staff will perform minor color corrections and touch ups after scanning as a complimentary service. (See our disclaimer below.)

All other image formats, such as large or medium format transparencies and prints, will incur fees for scanning. During the construction of your site, scanning fees are subject to discounted introductory rates:

2 ¼ Transparency: $11/ea
4 x 5 Transparency: $16/ea
8 x 10 Transparency: $21/ea
Reflective Prints: $50/hour

Original Artwork Disclaimer: A digital image can look very different from the original. This can be disconcerting if you've never seen your images in digital format before, or if you are accustomed to seeing high-resolution, printable-quality scans. For best results, we recommend that you have your own images scanned, using a Scanner you trust, color correct them, and send us the digital files.

Details: Scanning methods and equipment cause digital scans to look different from one company to the next. The process of compressing an image into a JPG for the web can negatively impact color saturation, especially in the reds. Variance among monitor calibrations causes images to appear different from one person to the next, making color corrections difficult to do, even when comparing scans to originals - e.g. what looks good on our monitor may not look good on yours. Most importantly, only you know how your images should look!

IMAGE DISPLAY OPTIONS

Image Sizes On Your Website
Unless requested otherwise, we will size your images for your website according to our default values. These sizes have been chosen to allow rapid downloading for viewers with slow Internet connections. It may also deter illegal reproduction.
spacer
Extra-Large Images: Most HTML and Hybrid websites can accommodate larger images than are shown in the website examples. There is no fee to have larger images on these sites so long as you request it on your Artwork Submission form, before we begin construction on your website. Flash websites have fixed image sizes and require customization for enlargement. However, most Flash websites are already designed with larger images as part of the base design.
Image Cropping
Your Portfolio will feel more balanced and cohesive if your portfolio's thumbnail preview images are all the same size. This effect can be accomplished by cropping your thumbnails into perfect squares.
spacer
Cropping is a complimentary service. You can indicate your preference for cropping or no cropping on your Artwork Submission Form.
spacer
If you request cropping, you may provide cropping guidelines with your artwork submission. Otherwise our designers will use their discretion. Re-cropping your images after our designers have finished production will result in a fee to cover the extra time.
spacer
We will not crop your large, full version images.
spacer
Exceptions:
Simple, Satellites, Postcard, Prism, Prismatic, Vision and Sharp styles require cropped thumbnails. Our designers will crop your thumbnails to fit these styles automatically. Removing the crop on these styles is a customization.
spacer
The Slideshow style requires images on the Home, Bio, Spotlight, Contact, and Info pages to be 590 pixels wide by 450 pixels tall. You may submit images already cropped at this size. Otherwise, our staff will crop them to fit. Portfolio images are NOT cropped.

Watermarking
A watermark is a semi-transparent copyright notice discreetly placed over your image, in the bottom right corner. A Watermark will appear as such:

© First Last

Example:

spacer
If you prefer a different presentation than First Last, you may indicate your preference on your artwork submission form. This might include the inclusion of your middle name, a hyphenated or double/married last name, or if you prefer to use your business name instead of your given name. Please let us know ahead of time to avoid a production fee.
spacer
The purpose of a watermark is to remind viewers that your images are copyrighted, and to discourage theft by embedding difficult-to-remove text over the image itself.
spacer
We will include watermarks on your images at your request. This is a free service so long as you request it with your artwork submission, before production begins.
spacer
A watermark is not the same thing as a Digital Watermark. It will not give you the ability to monitor or trace unauthorized use.

LOGO

We encourage you send a copy of your logo, which we will incorporate into your website at no extra charge. This will lend cohesiveness to your marketing and branding efforts, and makes a bigger impact on the viewer.

If you do not have a logo, we will create a simple banner/title to match your website. Please indicate the verbiage you would like to use for your title on your artwork submission form.

CUSTOM WEBSITES

If your website will have customizations, please make a note of this in your Artwork Submission Form, along with a brief outline of customizations needed. You may have discussed your customizations previously with an SDW staff member, however an outline is still required. A member of our production staff will contact you to finalize your design needs when we are ready to begin production on your website.

TIMELINE FOR COMPLETION

Our production team will complete your website within 60 days of receiving ALL necessary materials, including artwork and artwork submission form, an original art release form (if required), a logo if you have one, and a domain name with correct host settings.

Websites with customizations may take longer.

WEBSITE REVIEW

When production is complete, you will receive an email from our Production Staff with a link to your website. This marks the beginning of your Review Week, during which you should request any minor refinements or corrections to your site. You should also begin adding text to your site through the Text Wizard (see below).

When the Review Week is complete, your site will go live to the world and your hosting fees with begin. At this point, any adjustments or additions that cannot be done through the Text Wizard will be subject to our regular production fees.

THE TEXT WIZARD

The Text Wizard is the dynamic online interface that allows you to edit the content of your website. It is available to you throughout the life of your website free of charge.
